Most Garages Aren't Set Up for EV Work. Ours Is.

Electric vehicles carry high-voltage battery systems that operate at 400V or higher. Working on them without the correct training and equipment is dangerous for the technician and for the vehicle. Not every garage has invested in that training. We have.

Our technicians hold IMI qualifications specifically covering electric vehicle servicing and repairs. That's the standard set by the Institute of the Motor Industry for safe, competent EV work in the UK. It's not a course certificate from a weekend workshop — it's a nationally recognised qualification. If your electric car needs servicing, a fault investigated, or an MOT, you can bring it to MotorWorld and know it's being worked on by someone qualified to do it correctly.

What EV Servicing Covers at MotorWorld

  • EV health checks and diagnostics — battery management system, motor, charging systems
  • Battery system inspections — state of charge, degradation assessment, cell balance
  • Brake servicing — EVs use regenerative braking, which changes how conventional brakes wear. We know the difference and service accordingly.
  • Tyre inspection and fitting — EVs are heavier than equivalent petrol or diesel vehicles and wear tyres differently. We check for this.
  • Cooling system checks — battery thermal management is critical to both range and battery longevity
  • Suspension and steering
  • MOT testing for electric vehicles
  • Charging system checks — onboard charger diagnostics
  • General mechanical repairs — applicable components on your specific EV model

Why EV Servicing Requires the Right Qualifications

01

High-Voltage Safety

EV battery systems operate at voltages that are genuinely dangerous without the correct protective equipment and procedures. IMI qualifications cover the safe handling, isolation, and work procedures for high-voltage systems. This is not something a standard automotive qualification covers.

02

Different Wear Patterns

Regenerative braking means the friction brakes on an EV are used less than on a conventional car. Over time this can cause brake discs to corrode and seize rather than wear. A technician who doesn't understand this may overlook a brake issue that a conventional wear check would miss.

03

Battery Health Is Not Obvious From the Outside

A battery that appears to be performing normally may have degraded cells or a charging imbalance that isn't visible without a diagnostic assessment. We carry out battery inspections that look beyond the basic charge level and assess the actual condition of the system.

01

IMI Qualified EV Technicians

Our technicians hold IMI qualifications specifically for electric vehicle work. This is the industry standard for EV servicing in the UK, and not all garages can say the same.

AA Approved status is independently assessed. It verifies our workshop standards, equipment, and working practices to a nationally recognised standard — including for EV work.

03

Every EV service includes a free health check, covering the full condition of your vehicle beyond the standard service items. If we find something worth knowing about, we'll tell you plainly and give you a written quote. No obligation to proceed.

04

3-Year Parts Warranty

All components fitted during EV servicing or repairs carry a 3-year parts warranty. Labour is not covered. We are clear about this with every customer before work starts.

Motorworld was a chance find on autotrader, I then found the website and I am so glad I did. Bought the car on Friday and I have it today, less then a week later with a bank Holiday in the middle. I want to say thank you to the lads, they are brilliant and I am glad I found them. Had a small issue and straight out. I will be back when it's time to MOT!

I had a new water pump and timing belt fitted in my car with Motorworld. Cheaper then other quotes I had, fit me in quicker then initially quoted and open and honest communication from them. Went to see them for a diagnosis of my issues on a Friday afternoon and had a new water pump and timing belt fitted by Saturday afternoon. Great service and will be the first place I stop by if I have any more car issues.

Frequently Asked Questions About EV Servicing

Not safely, no. EV high-voltage systems require specific training and equipment. Working on them without proper qualifications is a genuine safety risk. Our technicians hold IMI qualifications covering EV work specifically — this is the standard the industry uses to define safe, competent EV servicing. When choosing a garage for your EV, it's worth asking whether the technicians are IMI qualified for electric vehicle work.

Yes. Electric vehicles are subject to the same MOT requirements as petrol and diesel cars from three years old, with some differences — exhaust emissions testing doesn't apply, for example. We carry out MOT testing for electric vehicles at our Walkden centre.

EVs have fewer moving parts than conventional vehicles, so some service intervals are longer. But brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, and safety systems all need regular inspection. Your manufacturer's handbook sets the specific schedule for your vehicle. If you're unsure, call us and we'll advise based on your make, model, and mileage.

We check the battery management system, assess the state of charge and the level of degradation over time, and review the cell balance across the battery pack. If the battery is losing range faster than expected, or if a warning light has appeared, a diagnostic inspection tells you what's actually happening rather than leaving you guessing.

Yes. All components fitted during EV servicing or repairs carry our standard 3-year parts warranty. If a part fails within three years of fitting, we replace it. Labour is not covered by the warranty — we explain this to every customer before any work starts.
